It was a busy week as we combined working the Gaiter Basketball Camp with 115 kids in our gym and finding time to practice during lunch and supper. Not an ideal setting for training camp, but it was good to have most of the guys back regardless.
Northeastern plays in the Colonial Athletic Association with the likes of recent Final Four teams Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason. We were definitely a bit over matched and playing without our 2 point guards from last season did not help. Sean Monplaisir will not be at school this year and Scott Ring was unable to get time off from his summer job. 1st year pg Jona Bermillo and 2nd yr shooting guard Adam Spurrell assumed the pg responsibilities for the week. Jona was solid scoring 11 pts, but is still getting comfortable playing with our guys and a new system.
Onnex Blackwood was our leading scorer and rebounder with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Jeremy Leonard-Smith was solid with 9 points & some good defense as usual. Tim Hunter, Mike Andrews & Mukiya Post all had quiet games, but we expect to count on these guys throughout the year.
We are off until the first Tuesday in September before we start practicing & training as a team again. Following that we will have a few scrimmages vs. Cegep teams before facing the U of Ottawa in Drummondville on September 28th.
