Gaiters Comeback to Drop Gee Gees

Friday Night in Drummondville

BU      13    8    23    24   -   68
UO      24   18    8     15  -    65

Ottawa is a very talented team & if you are not diligent defensively they will really make you pay...hence our 21 point deficit at halftime. We did a poor job in transition both offensively & defensively...these are 2 areas we are generally pretty decent at. For whatever reason we were out of sorts & were getting nothing out of our key veteran guys.

We challenged our vets & they responded in the second half. Despite being down by as much as 24 early in the 3rd Q we hung our hats on our defense putting together a 23-0 run at one point to eventually take a lead with about 8 minutes left in the game that we would not surrender. We built a double digit lead with 3 minutes to go, but Ottawa battled to keep it close.

3rd yr post Matt McLean led all scorers with 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Matt has worked hard all September in practice & in our strength/conditioning program. We all saw the results in this game!  3rd yr post Mike Andrews added 15 points & 8 rebounds to bolster our front line attack.  Jeremy Leonard-Smith appeared in the 2nd half when we needed him scoring 15 points & grabbing 10 rebounds. Generally speaking we really rebounded the ball well & made more free throws than Ottawa attempted which is always positive. Coach Pomykala would also be happy to know defended without fouling for the most part & except for a couple of occasions were disciplined in that area.

Gaiters Take On Gee Gees in Drummondville

This Friday we travel  to Drummondville to face the talented Ottawa Gee Gees. It  will be a good test for us this early in the year having to contend with a team that shoots the ball very well and has some serious offensive weapons.

To  this point we have scrimmaged a few Cegeps which has provided some mixed results. At  times  we have looked  good, but as  expected in September there is still lots  to  work on. We will not be as deep as we were last  year, but if our top  players  play consistently well we will be a better team than last season. Without any bonafide superstars we will have to share the ball well and defend well as a team though.

Friday's game will be played at 8 pm at:

École secondaire Marie Rivier

265, rue St-Félix
Drummondville (Québec)
J2C 5M1

In additions to my update, team captain Tim Hunter will be contributing to our blog. You can check out Tim's stuff at the Captain's Corner link on the right side of the page!
